Jon Gewirtzman

I’m a plant, microbial, and ecosystem ecologist and biogeochemist. I’m interested in how ecosystems influence, and are influenced by, the global cycles of carbon, nutrients, and greenhouse gases in our era of rapid environmental change. I’m particularly fascinated by interactions between plants, microbes, and their environments, across scales from genes to ecosystems, and by how we can use those processes for environmental solutions.

I’m a Stanford Science Fellow in the Department of Earth System Science, working with the Jackson Lab. I completed my PhD at the Yale School of the Environment in 2026, and have been a research fellow at Harvard Forest, an LTER Synthesis Fellow with NCEAS, and adjunct faculty in the Connecticut College Department of Botany.
